February’s Cadent Colour : a garnet heart / a garnet gem
The word garnet has been known since the 14th century as describing a dark red colour. Derived from the Latin word granatus (grain, seed), it has been linked to the exotic pomegranate’s seeds. Not only as a colour comparison, but also for the similarities the seeds have to the garnet’s crystal size, shape and colour.
A silicate mineral used since the Bronze Age as a gemstone, it is considered to be of lesser value than a ruby and remains somewhat underused as a colour compared to crimson or scarlet.
Garnet, a gem and colour not necessarily as well known as the ruby, is the colour of choice for February no matter what its popularity status or value may be.
