Love Comes Around : Dec 26

Winter’s Warmth

Five days had passed since the plane had landed. The fourth night after a bus ride through the city and mountain passes, she was well rested, but still uneasy.

Like a breath withheld, the air stood still, but the morning chill nevertheless reached her exposed cheeks. Her steady steps, muffled in snow, the arctic air took on a different feel. Even though she was surrounded by icicles, snow, below zero degrees – there was something so comforting in this new winter refuge she had travelled to.

Everywhere in sight, like a duvet of goose down, the lush and solid evergreens were covered with a blanket of white so thick. Nestled below the purest and most natural duvet of snow, she couldn’t help but imagine how cozy those nettles must be.

A hint of amber light caught the corner of her eye. She leaned into the pine’s snowy branches to better see what she first thought to be a flickering flame. Her entire body and breath, as still as the air, like a movie the scene quickly unraveled.

Less than a week ago, this was she, in her home with friends and family.

Unable to tear herself away, unblinking she stayed as the chill of doubt and fear drew nearer. This inevitably always translated into sorrow. But she was quick to abate the ache.

One last peer into the home’s warm glow, she pulled herself back from the snowy branches. A quick clench of the jaw and a deep breath in, the cold air refreshed like a shot of peppermint. Turning away from the sight of what so recently had been, with every step, determination and resilience set in.

The snow-covered ground led her gaze to the mountaintops covered with a blanket of white. Uncertain which reached her first, the touch or the sight, but the morning’s first snowflake caught her eyelashes. Even after the quick glow of laughter and quick blinking eyes, undeterred, like a magnet it stuck. The snowflake remained as thick as the others covering the trees and mountaintops. It did not budge. Not until her glove-covered fingertip brushed it off and onto her index. There, where she could better see it, the snowflake did not budge. It did not melt. It stayed.

Funny she thought, how its icy cold particles instantly warmed her heart.

“Mom!” The familiar and joyful sound of her daughter’s voice jolted her back to reality, and before she could even conjure the wish, there was Cailyn, finally.

“Dad drove me here, but Mark’s on his way. He’ll be here any day now.”

Arms wrapped in a hug filled with so much comfort, no longer able to hold back tears; tears of joy, relief, and love tumbled onto her daughter’s scarf.

Mother and daughter slowly parted from the warmth and closeness of the hug, but never again would they part as they had so many years before.

Then one by one, as they both walked on, snowflakes gathered from beyond and gently dropped from the sky above.

One two three four
And so many many more
Came down slowly silently
From the sky down to the ground

One two three four
And so many many more
Star-like snowflakes filled the air
On this December so silent and fair

Winter Waits

Four days had passed since Cailyn’s return. It had been nine nights since she last saw him, and still, there had been no word.

“Eleven is the cut-off” She recalled him once saying. If the eleventh day came without a word from either one, both of them would call in.

She pulled the thick duvet away from the bed’s corner and tucked the feather-filled pillows against the headboard. Then, before the phone even rang, her eyes quickly shifted to catch the blinking light.

“Have a good sleep mom. I’ll see you in the morning.” Cailyn’s invitation for a morning walk and breakfast was comforting and a pleasant thought to ease her into another night.

Another night
Another night
Without you here

After a quick read, she flicked the light off and sank into the comfort of the down-filled bed. As discomforting as her thoughts were, she had long ago learned to set her mind at ease for a restful sleep.

Last night I slept again
Without you here

But in my dreams
You’re always near

Another night
Another night
Without you near

After I wake
From this night’s sleep

Another day will come
And you’ll be here

Another night
Another night
You will be here

I swirled and turned onto my right
And held you tight

And then the morning light
Saw your pillow so white

Warmed by the heat captured below the cozy comforter, she lay awake for a while before the gentle hum of the morning call went off. She had set her phone for 6:00am to allow time for a vigorous exercise routine prior to meeting-up with Cailyn.

Barely dried off after a quick shower, she wrapped herself up with a towel to catch the ringing phone.

“Mom, there’s been a slight change in plans.” Christa’s heart sank.

“My dad’s going to join us for breakfast, he’s here with a friend.” Her heart slowly climbed up again.

“I’m not supposed to say anything, but knowing what you must be going through, I’m not able to keep this from you.” The pause passed without a word from Christa, then Cailyn went on to say, “Your brother’s here with my dad.”

Christa rolled her eyes, shook her head, and refrained any words from escaping her.

“I know, I know, you haven’t seen him in a long time, and it’s not who you expected, but everything’s going to be okay mom. Please don’t worry. I’m heading over to pick you up now.”

Cailyn’s caring but rushed tone instantly softened when Christa wrapped up their conversation, “Thanks for everything you’re doing. This isn’t easy for any of us. I love you.”

Christa slowly placed the phone down after her daughter’s kind words, “I love you too mom. I’ll see you in less than fifteen minutes.”

Evergreen

Carleen no longer grieved for, but often remembered Charlie. Almost two decades had passed since he was declared missing. Never to be seen again, yet his body never recovered, had instilled a great deal of confusion while she tried to move on with her life.

Walking along the chilled sidewalk, she passes concrete walls, wood and metal doors, clear and tinted windows. Initially caught by her own reflection, she looks through the floor-to-ceiling glass facade and notices a man sitting at a restaurant bar. Not a super-styled metro-handsome kinda-man, but more of a distinguished, confident, with a touch of rugged and real kinda-man. He instantly looks up and gazes back at her.

His unblinking eyes stay locked into hers as she gaits along the sidewalk. Caught by the wind, wisps of raven strands whisk along her cheekbone and lips. Still caught-up with him, his intense yet non-threatening mesmerizing stare slips through her like a strand of silken lining. A very pleasant sensation reminiscent of how she felt whenever close to Charlie, but unlike Charlie, whose eyes were green, this man’s eyes are pale blue.

Releasing memories of the past, she suddenly finds herself smiling at him. Albeit a Mona Lisa closed-lip smile, it’s an undeniably real and heartfelt one which he reacts to with an inquisitive squint and tilt of the head.

Their limited reaction is familiar to both of them. Harnessed and controlled emotions from two individuals’ protecting their innate core due to heartbreak and loss, is easily recognized without words being spoken.

Carleen, obliged to release the captivating moment in order to not trip and fall flat-faced on the sidewalk, struggles with multitudinous thoughts running through her head. Should I turn back? Should I attempt sign language through the glass? Or should I just keep walking? Her thoughts brought to an abrupt stop by two towering glass doors, she inhales cold air and exhales a massive cloud of condensed warm breath while paused by the open doors.

Their gaze broken as she disappeared beyond the street side windows, he turns back to the bar where a slight sigh escapes him. His thoughts, now becoming clearer, he tries to figure out where he remembers her from. Had they met before? She looked so familiar to him, yet at the same time, he couldn’t understand how he could ever forget someone as captivating as the woman who had just walked by.

Signaling the bartender for another glass of rye, a swaying motion catches his attention. His shoulders solidly anchored in place, he looks to his left. His eyes lock into hers again, he maintains his cool and appears unaffected while she stands just a couple of seats away from him.

Her smile sends a glitter to her eyes as she asks inquisitively, “I couldn’t help but notice you as I walked by. I wonder if we might’ve met before?”

Slightly stunned to hear his own thoughts uttered, his stalling response is broken by the pleasant cadence of her voice, “But then again, I’m quite certain I’d remember you if we had met before.”

Her playful demeanor sparks a smooth row of laughter to escaping him. Having yet to vocalize his thoughts, he finds himself intrigued and slightly bewildered. Who was this, and what were the chances of her standing here next to him? Lost in his thoughts, the pause extends without a word from him.

“I apologize. I didn’t mean to interrupt. I just thought I might know you.” Still smiling, she leans back slightly and prepares to turn away, “Enjoy the rest of the evening.”

Quickly awakened from his stupor, his back straightens but he remains in his seat and promptly stops her from walking away, “No, no, not at all. You weren’t interrupting me. Not from anything other than myself trying to figure out where I might know you from.”

Her smile gradually widens with relief as he moves the seat immediately next to his, “Please, won’t you join me for a drink while we try to resolve this shared conundrum?”

Moving back and forth in time, years together or apart, love keeps coming around for this couple. Over time and a time again, they keep on meeting once again.

Conifer

So many years had passed. So much time. So many ups and downs. Too much time had passed between them for it to ever be the same. Nevertheless, here they were sitting next to each other, once again.

The casual conversation between the two flowed effortlessly between sips of his rye and hers of wine. Her glass still half full, the drunken sensation of thoughts and emotions swirled through her intensely. All the while, easily maintaining her composure, all she could conjure was the memory of his touch.

“So what do you think? Would you be up to that?” The mellifluous sound of his voice, just like her beating heart, came to a sudden stop. All she could hear was the question mark.

“Excuse me?” Her eyebrows raised as she leaned forward slightly, “I’m so sorry, I couldn’t hear what you were saying.”

Quick to get a hold of herself and out of her wandering thoughts, she swiftly added, “It’s surprising how noisy it is all of a sudden!”

Both caught up in momentary laughter, the entire side of her body gently reeled into tingles as he leaned-in closer and placed his hand on hers. The noise she had referred to, she no longer heard. The swirl of thoughts and emotions, she no longer felt. His pale blue eyes was all she could see, and the warmth of his hand – so solid and strong, yet so gently placed upon hers – this she remembered clearly.

He repeated the proposition that had gone unheard. Snowshoes, lodge, trail, the words swished through her head like snow drifts. She found herself suddenly recalling the winters spent without him. Not knowing where he had been or if he would ever return. But he was here now, and somehow, their paths had crossed again.

The momentary pause ended quickly when she responded cautiously, “I really want to do that with you. But I’d like to give it some thought.”

The deep exhale couldn’t be heard and his entire demeanor remained unflinching, but his heart had dropped like an anchor to the ocean floor.

So many winters
Through stormy seas
    like billowing

    pillowing
    drifting snow
When all I could do
Was dream of you

“I just wonder if we should talk about where we go from here.” She placed her hand atop his as she stood from her seat and glanced towards the restrooms, “But you’ll have to excuse me for a moment before we get into that.”

She slid by him like a breath. Her hand now resting on his shoulder and her lips so near, the familiar intimacy they once shared brushed through him like the whisper of a breeze, “I’ll be right back.”

Those were the last words he had said to her, but they wouldn’t be hers.

“Perhaps we could get a table and a bite to eat.” She prompted kindly, hinting at her desire to pursue with their reacquaintance.

His heart lifted as he watched the gliding motion of her familiar being. Then with a quick glance back towards him, the twinkle of her eye reminded him of everything she had endured and how easily and naturally playful she had always been.

If I were a wave
With you by my side
     with you I would ride
     through any season
     winter sleet or rain
Until the sun shone
On us again

Wintering In

It wasn’t my intention to become overly involved in a relationship or emotionally attached to anyone just yet. As I had mentioned over dinner, I wasn’t in a position to offer anything more than companionship. But I found myself enjoying your company more than I had expected, and when we reminisced about our brief and delightful past, it became increasingly difficult to resist the temptation of diving into intimate moments with you.

Just as easily as our conversation flowed, I vacillated between the pull of attraction I felt for you and the reasoning of the circumstances I faced.

A perceptive impression
A physical connection
An innate attraction
Remained with me
After all these years
And now once again
As we both are here

After months of working on a complicated assignment that had tossed, turned, and thrown me in all sorts of misleading directions, I was frustrated, exhausted, and confused by the series of events that had occurred and the information I had gathered. The final blow was when I was suddenly fired without any prior indication or notice whatsoever. Adding to the indignation, after expressing my disbelief and disputing the invalid reasons for the firing, I was escorted out of the building by security without being permitted to gather my personal belongings.

Assailed through winter winds
I keep trying to stand still
Blown and tossed around
In every possible direction

Although several months had passed when I saw you along that glass facade, the aftershocks often resonated clearly. I had considered taking legal action against the company, but without the financial resources available to take on such a juggernaut of a corporation, I was left to move on. Soon after hired on a contract basis by a similar company, I cloaked myself in pleasant and professional airs every day I walked into the office.

But when with you, I never felt the need to cover myself up with anything other than myself. Just as when we had first met almost a decade ago, it always felt natural, comfortable, and invigorating to be with you.

Your touch was real
The way you made me feel
Now and then and now again
It was and is surreal

The intimate pleasures we had once shared brought our dinner conversation to a close. But being the two level-headed and cautious individuals we had become, we refrained from the intense temptations we both felt and agreed to meet again for what you had initially suggested – a snowshoe hike through the winter trails.

Exiting the restaurant with the towering glass facade behind us, you reached for me before I could walk away and kindly said, “We’re not really leaving it like this are we?”

Your light but assertive touch on the underside of my wool-coat covered arm didn’t feel as though you were holding on but merely there, patiently waiting, which I always thought to be so polite, endearing, and exciting. Then the warmth of your palm brushed passed my arm and along my lower back and I couldn’t help but move closer to you.

Closer
Closer
Closer again we were
I’ve wanted you this close
For far too long
Why must again we part
For one more time

Hesitation set in, but less than momentarily. Uncertainty was a given, but your presence felt like heaven.

So I allowed myself to be wrapped up in the warmth and tenderness of your arms. Yet still, as though guarding and protecting myself from loss again, I kept both of my hands securely close to my heart. But you held on gently and patiently. You stayed unflinching and solid and warm. Soon released from uncertainty and doubt, my left palm opened and rested close to your heart, and my right arm slowly slid down and around your back.

We must have stood like this forever as though in a dream. Then you lifted me slightly up off the ground and the view of our reflection in the glass facade brought me to realize how this was real. Still held close to one another, my shoulders arched back to glimpse into your pale blue eyes. Seconds passed as though frozen in time, and while every particle of air between us warmed to a haze, my lips brushed against yours until we kissed.

Winter’s Wonders

“I told you I’d be right back.”

Still in somewhat of a stupor, the cadent and elegant manner in which he wafted through snow had caught her attention. It wasn’t a swagger or strut, but there was an attractive confidence in the way he carried himself.

He moved like him, but looked nothing like him. Had he not touched her as their paths crossed, she very well might have walked past him. It wasn’t even a touch, but more of a tingling whisper. It was that undeniable sensation that whisked through her whenever he was near.

Whispering snow drifts
Whisk through air
Whenever you’re near
What becomes so clear
Wherever we’ve been
Whatever we’ve seen
What-ifs don’t exist
When we’re both here

Unrecognizable with darker hair, the change in the colour of his eyes was what perplexed her most. But the sound of his voice and his touch was like no other. She’d never known anyone to ever feel like that before. It was as though they had been together lifetimes ago and longer.

“Mmm …” His index gently pressed on her lips before she could even pronounce his name.

“Shh.” He hushed her gently as he drew nearer, “It’s Jake.”

So close she could feel the warmth of his breath, he whispered in her ear, “I really didn’t mean to keep you waiting this long.”

Closer
Closer
Again we are
No matter how long or far
We’ve been apart
Closer
Closer
Again we are

All sounds disappeared and everything around them dissipated as he looked straight into her eyes and said, “It’s over.”

Like a night sky filled with stars, her glittering eyes welled into tears of joy. For so many years, their lives had been scattered, strewn and stunted. So many years apart when they should have been together. Finally, the legal trial was over and they could get on with their lives.

Her thoughts still somewhat scattered, she shook off the tears and escaped from past memories. With a coquettish grin, one she kept just for him, relief and joy washed over him as she playfully asked, “Well Jake, what are we going to do with ourselves now?”

After years of struggling through the highly classified legal trial they were both involved in, the couple at the center of Love Comes Around can finally enjoy their time together.

But how they’ll do this is still up in the air.

Forced to relocate again due to dangers surrounding the case, where they’ll be sent off to this time and what form of new identification they’ll once again take-on has yet to come.

Winter Whispers

“I’m collecting hearts.” He said as they walked along the salt-covered sidewalk.

The paper bag crumpled into her gloved hands as he asked her to hold the bottle of wine they had just purchased. After a couple of quick shots, they looked at the pictures. What a great eye he had. With only streetlights reflecting on what was left of winter’s snow, the outline of a heart melting into the sidewalk was so clearly seen in the photo.

They returned to her apartment for a quiet evening dinner. As much as they loved to dine out, both of them also enjoyed preparing meals together. Only six months since they had met, everything flowed so easily and naturally between the two. But there was something peculiar about this evening. Although both quite comfortable with silence between them, there was a weight of concern looming with his every gaze.

“Do we have all the ingredients for this?” She asked casually while adding oregano to the sauce, “Cuz you seem to be in rather deep thought.”

A few stirs without a response, she lifted the spoon and blew on it gently. Her palm below to avoid any drips, she led it towards him for his lips to taste.

“Delicious.” Eyes locked, they both smiled as he gently took the spoon from her and placed it in the sink, “There’s nothing missing here other than to let it simmer.”

Closer
Closer
Closer like this
I like it when move like this
So close to this

The change in rhythm they both slid into was always effortless. He lowered the stove-top settings to ensure nothing would overcook or burn, but as he turned and moved closer to her, every particle of air between them intensified with heat. Then all dissipated with the touch of his hands as he drew her in and lifted her into his arms. Thighs wrapped firmly around his waistline, dinner’s aromas wafted into the living room where the mellow cadence of music met his steps as he led her into the bedroom.

Whispering snow drifts
Whisk through air
Whenever we’re near
What becomes so clear
Whilst in whimsical
White noise silence
Wishing forever
With you like this
