Sunbathing on a sandy beach while reflecting on days gone by, this drawing came to be while writing about childhood memories of my brother and I, playing in the sandbox with his yellow tonka trucks.
With a single HB pencil, I dotted along a piece of paper to create the effect of sand while I literally dug a hole in the sand with my toes. Although I didn’t get to the point of excavating a cliff as portrayed in the drawing, I did make a substantial dent in the sand and often found myself filling it back up again while I switched back and forth between drawing and writing.
Although the poem Tonka Toes resides in the Realism category of Cadent Poems, I felt compelled to include it here, simply to demonstrate how I applied the sand-digging-toe theme towards a more somber theme.
