Introduction

Sprinkled with imagination and a touch of poetic drama, the poems featured in Family Garden reflect on the distant longings of family members.

Some poems visit childhood memories while others focus on present ones, and a few wander through the imagination and take on fantasized musings. But no matter where the poems stem from, they all meander through the beauty of things that grow in gardens.

Arborescence

Your roots reach far and wide
Below the underground
Holding the soil together
For us to bloom upon

Your canopy’s expanse
Provides comfort and shelter
From excessive temperatures
Throughout every season

You are solid tall and strong
A natural protector
Rugged and elegant
Sturdy and handsome

You grow and keep on reaching
For the sky above
While protecting us constantly
To bloom in all our beauty

Florescence

An empty nest
My heart’s become
Now that my loved ones
Are all gone
But everywhere in gardens
Nests still grow
And in my heart soon again
Love will bloom

Alyssum

Whenever I see alyssum
I’m reminded of my mom

Sweet sweet alyssum
A fragrance so sweet
Like the sweet voice of my mom
When she sang me sweet songs
Before I fell asleep

I miss you mom
I’ve missed you for so long
More than I miss alyssum
More than I miss my garden
And more than any song

I miss you and I love you mom
I know you must know
That no matter what
Has come and gone
Between us for so long

No matter how much
Time has passed
Our love will surpass
Any obstacles or barriers
That keep on coming at us

I miss you and I love you mom
More than sweet alyssum

Iris

When you passed away
I was far away
At the time I was told
Irises meant to remember
A symbol of remembrance
Purple flowering irises
I sent to be with you
To rest by your side

When you passed away
I was far away
I wasn’t there to see you off
Instead of I by your side
Irises were laid
To let passersby know
I’d always remember
I’d never forget you

Then now and forever
You are my only iris
Then now and forever
I love and remember you
Then now and forever

Sunflower

Pretty bright and freckled
You are a sunflower
Although not quite as tall
You are just as glorious

You arrived in daytime
And brought with you the sunshine
Then I arrived at night
And you stood by me so bright

You were prudent and obedient
Nurturing and intelligent
Always helpful and compliant
And such a good student

Pretty bright and freckled
You are my sunflower
Although not quite as tall
You are just as glorious

Trillium

My little brother
Sweet as pie
Cute as a button
Funny as can be

A trillium at attention
Your father left too soon
You were far too young
Expected or required to be
The man of our family

A solid trillium
Amongst a herd
Of bleeding hearts
You grew up on your own
And learned to soldier on

All I remember is my little brother
Sweet as pie
Cute as a button
Funny as can be
Always wanting nothing more
Than to play with me

MyCalla

Your bloom so radiant
Surounded in abundance
By deep green foliage

Your core so solid
Upright and determined
You stand tall and proud

Your petal so elegant
Undeniably
My favourite blooming beauty

MeLilac

If I had a towering tree
To call my own
Perhaps my family garden
Would still bloom as one

Transplanted
Across the land
We bloom independently
Throughout our country

So if I had to be a tree
For my family garden
Perhaps I would be
A lilac tree

Then I could be
A flower and a tree
To protect and sustain
My family

A canopy of verdant leaves
Would shelter those I love
And fragrant blooms
Would sweeten their hearts
While roots spread below
For them to stand upon
Then perhaps again
We could bloom as one

Arboreal

A garden I came upon
Without an evergreen
In a land that is meant
To forever be green
So I added one here
And another one there
To protect through the winters
And to shade in the summers
So your garden may once again
Bloom safely

Closing Remarks

Notes from Cadence:

With the intention of expanding the collection of poems featured in Family Garden, I struggled when considering to include many of the romanticized, whimsical and fantasized pieces I had written over the years. Then, while in the midst of finalizing the selection from various floral and arboreal themed poems, a global health crisis broke out.

The restrictions and isolation brought on by the limitations presented by Covid-19 seemed to emphasize how long I’ve been distanced from my family, so I chose to dedicate this relatively small collection to my closest and dearest family members.

Choosing to meet the self-imposed deadline I had set for myself, some days drove home the sense of longing and made it a rather bleak task to accomplish and finalize. But just as I’ve plowed through other difficult times, I spent some days with my head in the sand, while on other days, I bloomed.

Surrounding myself with positive thoughts while soaking in the beauty of fresh blooms allowed for pleasant distractions as I shuffled through my Family Garden. Thankfully, I had access to a garden where I could care for and maintain some springtime blooms, while a few new items were added here and there.

Thank you for visiting my Family Garden.

About the Author

Born in Canada, I grew up in one of our country’s greatest cities – Montreal, Quebec. After moving to another major city, as a young adult I lived in Toronto until I made my way further west to the beautiful Pacific coast of British Columbia.

No matter where I lived – whether it was the colder climates of the east, or the temperate and rainy weather of the west coast, I always enjoyed gardenning. From a small balcony, where potted flowers and greenery blossomed, or a back yard where vegetables could grow – there’s something very comforting and soothing about shuffling through dark soil while adding colours and textures to what could otherwise be somewhat of a bland canvas.

Although most of the poems featured in Family Garden were written during times when I didn’t have access to a garden, the lasting memories of such a simple pleasure is how this collection came to be.

Thank you for taking a moment of your time to get to know about me.

Cadence B.
