2 : Landscape of Love

I love you more than the sun shines bright
I love you more than the moon glows at night

Because I love you more – more than anything
I love you more than everything in the world

I love you more than the mountains are high
I love you more than the ocean’s tide

Because I love you more – more than anything
I love you more than everything in the world

I love you more than the sky is blue
I love you more than a flower bloom

Because I love you more – more than anything
I love you more than everything in the world

I love you so you make my heart beat
Each day with you is such a special treat

Because I love you more – more than anything
I love you more than everything in the world

Why I wrote Landscape of Love:

Landscape of Love didn’t start off as a poem, it was a thought and a feeling that turned into a verse which I often sang to you when settling you down for the night. When your first birthday drew closer, I decided to write a lullaby as a keepsake for all the wonderful moments and incredible joy that came with your first year. Entirely aware that at such an early age you wouldn’t realize or understand the meaning of this gift or what it meant, I nevertheless set out to express everything you meant to me and all I was feeling through words a child could relate to.

You must’ve been three or four years old when I sat by your bed one evening after reading a story, and then I went on to sing you to sleep with your very own lullaby.

I thought for certain that you were asleep; your eyes closed, you seemed so calm and peaceful as I sang, “I love you so you make my heart beat” but then the corner of your lips curled as I gently tapped my fingertips close to your heart.

You tried so hard to keep your eyes closed as you giggled and said, “I really like this part mom” and then went on to explain how you loved the fingertip tap following the rhythm of the song because it felt just like your heartbeat. We went on to chat a little bit more about the song, and then you asked if I could sing it once more because it made you feel so happy.

How I wrote Landscape of Love:

I moved to the west coast almost two years prior to writing your lullaby and I was in constant awe of the natural beauty everywhere within sight. Very soon after moving I was pregnant with you, and soon after you were born, which brought even greater awe and joy into my life.

I can’t remember exactly when I intentionally started writing Landscape of Love. I sang bits of it here and there throughout your first year until we got closer to your birthday when I decided to put it together and write it out for you.

I love you more than the sun shines bright
I love you more than the moon glows at night

I love you more than the mountains are high
I love you more than the ocean’s tide

I love you more than the sky is blue
I love you more than a flower bloom

When writing the lullaby, I wanted to compare the appreciation I had for our natural environment with the incredible joy and love you brought into my life.

This set the tone for nature’s part, which I interpreted in settings a child could easily relate to, followed by the chorus emphasizing the love I felt for you as my child.

The repetition of the chorus, “Because I love you more …” is how the lullaby actually started. I would sing it to you every now and then, and after being out for a day, I would add a line here and there. This is how Landscape of Love came to be.

Because I love you more – more than anything
I love you more than everything in the world

More on how I wrote Landscape of Love:

I love you so you make my heart beat
Each day with you is such a special treat

After singing the lullaby to you throughout the months of your first year and nearing your first birthday, I realized it needed a few more lines to wrap it all up.

This is when the heartbeat came into play and the reality of how every day I shared with you was so precious and meaningful.

It was the perfect way to wrap-up the steady rhythm of the song while expressing how much you mean to me with the “tap-tap” beat that you loved so much.

Because I love you more – more than anything
I love you more than everything in the world

Drawing from the poem:

Soon after completing the lullaby, I drew images to go with each set of line but I no longer have those. One of the drawings was of us on a day hike with you sitting in the backpack your dad had given us. There was another drawing where you looked out your bedroom window up towards the moon at night, and one where we sat in a field filled with flowers looking towards the towering mountains in the backdrop. And of course, there was also a drawing with the ocean waves close to us.

I had thought of putting it together as a child’s picture book and writing about day trips we had taken together to accompany each verse. Our days were often very busy, and soon, I was working more frequently and never really got around to finishing what I had started.

The image included with the poem is a photo I took decades later. After cropping it and applying minor adjustments to lighten the tone of the bright blue sky, I recolored it and added a translucent film. In the end, I flipped the photo sideways to better fit on the page.

Here’s how I went about it:
