Introduction

After years of observing and interpreting ocean’s motion through words, these selected poems were inspired by nature, its beauty, its force, and its soothing presence.

Romantic themes resonate frequently with luxuriant verses reflecting wavelike motions filled with longings, love, loss, and hopes.

Ocean Air by Cadence Beret

Abateless

Watching waves
Crash upon a rocky shore

Cresting before
On rocks below the ocean

Jetting motion
Sprays up and dissipates

Rising abates
But waves keep rolling in

Heaving powering
Towards the rocky shore

Surges may abate
But the power moving these
Will never cease
They will move eternally

Brumal

Serene
Sensuous
Tranquil
Quiescence

The sound of stillness
Caresses the calmness

Inducing undulations
On the silent ocean

Waves sway serenely
And sensuously
While I move tranquilly
And quiescently
On cold concrete

Wintertime’s here
And you’re nowhere near

But I feel your warmth
As though you were here

Serenely
Sensuously
Tranquilly
Quiescently

Together we do this
So easily and peacefully
Naturally
In perpetuity

Chatoyance

Summertime is gone
And all I can do
Is dream of a beach and you

chatoyancing waves
glittering undulations
dancing on the ocean
with sunshine reflections

Falltime has arrived
But you’re still not near
My heart aches so without you here

chatoyancing heart
shimmers misty haze
feels like it might fade
in tear-filled shade

Winter soon will come
And my hibernating heart
I’m afraid might become numb

chatoyancing snowflakes
sparkling from above
twinkling in my heart
igniting thoughts of you my love

Spring will return
And I’ll keep on wishing
You’ll return to me

chatoyancing hopes
scintillating dreams
of what could be real
if only you were here

Dispersion

How amazing to see
You transform thee
From mist to fog
From raindrops to snowflakes
Only to seemingly
Disappear
When all but a breeze
Of you I feel
When close to the sea
On a hot summer’s eve
Where all of thee
Come together graciously
To flow freely
And naturally

Endless Seas

Your touch moves me
Like a wave on the sea
I want to be with you
For eternity

Choppy waves no more
Only smooth undulations
Rough waters no more
Only steady oscillations

My touch will ease
Your stormy seas
I want you here with me
For eternity

Foggish Fantasy

Flame-like wisps of fog
Akin to frozen salient fountains
Dance with December’s
Crisp chilled air

Projected from the ocean’s waves
Highlighted by the morning sun
White fire moves
With water’s motion

From what my eyes have seen
Of the real and surreal
And all that lies in-between
Earth’s heavenly scenes

You can still be seen
You are still everything
And all that lies in-between
Earth’s heavenly scenes

Graceful Motion

Full and gentle
Silky and voluptuous
Smooth and curvaceous
Continuous movement
Rhythmic motion

Waves undulate
Steadily and gracefully
Above the ocean bed
Then reflections come
Rippling on the water
Dancing graciously
To the ocean’s heart beat

Hazy Wave

The slow soothing motion
Of the ocean’s waves
Helps me to forget so many
Hard hazed days

Iridescent Wave

A warm ray of sun
Pierced through cloudy skies
Catching your wave
Like a rainbow’s spray

Jaded Wave

My jaded wave
Is lost at sea
Swaying gliding undulating
Gone unseen
Until the sun shines
And the breeze moves me
Then once again I’m joined with those
Close to me

Kneading

If I’m a rocky shore
Why must you knead me
swirling
whirling
twirling

Moving all around me
Over and under
Through every creviced part of me

If I’m a rocky shore
Why must I want your kneading
touching
sliding
gliding

Moving all around me
Over and under
Caressing every part of me

Liquescence

Languorous waves
      undulate and sway
      closer to the beach
As though your fingertips
Were touching me
      moving in slow mo
      to the ocean’s flow

This cadent rhythm
Is oh so soothing

Languorous waves
      enfold the sphere
      of oxygen unseen
As though your loving arms
Were surrounding me
      moving in slow mo
      to the ocean’s flow

This perpetual motion
Is oh so comfortable

Slow mo move me
Gently and quietly
  candescently
      liquescently
On a cadent breezy
Summer evening

Ocean Air by Cadence Beret

Mist a’Bliss

Tide is rising
Waves are crashing
White foam spray and mist
      glitters with oxygen
      sparkles on my skin
Oh what a bliss
To be so close to this

Tide is closing in
Hoping soon it will abate
How long shall I wait
For it to draw back in

White foam spray and mist
Is a’bliss amidst
A crowd without you here
      glittering and sparkling
      refreshing my skin
Oh how I miss
You with me so close to this

Natural Motion

Cool pale blue
Crisp summer waves
Caress an ebony
Log by the beach
Rocked back and forth
Gently covered with
      glistening
      scintillating
      sunshine sparkling
      diamonds reflecting
      on a curvy ebony
      log by the beach
Rocked back and forth
With the rhythm of the waves
      moving in slow-mo
      curling
      curving
      twirling to and fro
      rolling back and forth
at the edge of the beach
Resting in the sand
Waves keep moving
      tenderly
      gently
      quietly
      resting with the ebony
      log by the beach
      in eternal ecstasy

Oceanic Dance

Seaweed dances on the rocks
Swaying with the ocean’s heart

A cadent beat
A steady rhythm
From deep within
A place that can’t be seen
A place so well hidden
Reverberating
It’s moving all around me

A cadent heart
A steady beat
A wavelike symphony
Rocks are steady
Seaweed sways
Oceanic motion
Moves harmoniously

While I stand on the beach
And let the sea move me

Ocean Air by Cadence Beret

Paroxysmal Delight

I love how I can feel you
Anywhere and everywhere
Every time you’re near
And anytime you’re not here
You’re the air I breathe
The breeze that touches me
The zephyr that moves me
You’re everything I need

There are no words to describe
The absolute bliss
The sense of completeness
When every particle within
In and all around me
Irrepressibly
Intensify
And then subside

      exhilarated excitement
      uncontrolled release
      ebullient delight
      white noise silence

I am water reaching shore
I surge and crest and crash and roar
Every particle within
Bursts and explodes
Fizzes and foams
Blended with the air
I am vaporized
With you by my side

You are the atmosphere
Inside and all around me
We move together
We hover together
We slide and glide
Together side by side
Always and forever
You and I

      eternity exists
      with you by my side
      eternally
      with you I’ll always be

Ocean Air by Cadence Beret

Quiescence

The beach is mine tonight
No one can be seen or heard
Only waves along the shoreline

The soothing sound of waves
Caressing the shoreline
Only for me tonight

This bliss
This bliss
This quiescent bliss
This bliss
This bliss
There’s nothing quite like this

The silence of this space
When only waves can be heard
Is absolutely heavenly bliss

Quiescent bliss
Only for me tonight
The beach is mine

Reverie

Oh how I love
Late summer
Early mornings
On a sandy beach

Smooth swoosh sweeping waves
      of ocean rolling in
Filling every particle
      of air surrounding me
Sounding like the leaves
Dancing with the breeze

      smoothside
      beachside
      seaside symphony

Emerald green and amber
      waves are rolling in
Reflecting every colour
      of the undersea
Moving seaweed up to dance
On the ocean’s stage

      swooshside
      beachside
      seaside dancery

Oh how I love
Late summer
Early mornings
On a sandy beach

With the ocean at my feet
And clear blue sky above me
      salty water
      trees and leaves
      and seaweed in between
I’m privy to a free
Scenic summer symphony

      sweetside
      beachside
      seaside reverie

Sweet Reprieve

Summer’s fresh breeze
      gently whisks upon me
Ocean’s salty water
      rolls onto my body

Like the breeze on my skin
And the air that I breathe
Like the water that cools
And refreshes me
You’re everything I need
You’re summer heat’s reprieve

Ocean Air by Cadence Beret

Turbulence

Abounding in calms
What a conundrum
I found myself in
Caught-up in the doldrums

Without you my love
Everything flatlines

Until the squall
From deep inside my heart
Erupts and blows
Crashes upon the shore

Without you my love
My seas rage and roar

Why all of this unnecessary
Doldrumming turbulence
When inducing undulations
Into quiescent bliss

With you my love
Comes so naturally

Undulations

To see and feel you move
Like a wave on the sea
Releases innate passions
Residing within me

Two waves side by side
Moving with the wind
Natural and effortless
Eternal ecstasy

Your touch moves me
Like a wave on the sea
I want to be with you
For eternity

Two waves side by side
Together finally
Moving naturally
In eternal ecstasy

Vibrancy

Exhilarated and excited
Waves are rolling in
Roaring and resounding
Along the low-tide shoreline

      rambleside
      beachside
      seaside orchestra

Smooth steady soothing
Percussions pulsating
Vibrating vibrantly
With seaside’s summer breeze

Waves

Generated from above
Or coming from below
They always and forever
End up kissing the shore
Dancing with the rocks
Swaying with the seaweed
Moving to and fro
Curving up and down
Leaving and returning
Continuously
Always and forever
Eternally

Xanadu Beach

The swollen evening ocean
      rolls in tenderly
A log dances with the waves
      sinuously
The setting sun shines
      horizontally
White seagulls slide and glide
      as they fly by me

Wintertime’s gone
And spring is here
But you’re nowhere near
This spring beach evening
Where I lie by the sea
Without my one and only

When will you come around
And join me by the sea
With the seagulls and the sun
And the waves on the ocean
Where we can finally
Become one eternally

Closing

Notes from Cadence:

Much like the movement of waves swaying back and forth, while writing poetry daily, I shifted between word studies, writing, and walks along the shoreline.

The observations, thoughts, and overall inspiration culminated in several dozens of poems, and the continuous motion of waves continues to inspire me daily.

if I were a wave
with you by my side
moving with the wind
on the ocean’s bed

eternal ecstasy

A poem I wrote in 2012 titled Eternal Ecstasy was the driving force in assembling the collection featured in Ocean Air. It also prompted me to create the drawing pictured here, and it inspired me to choreograph a dance from the words that moved through me endlessly, just like the waves on the sea.

With only four lines featured with the drawing, please select the following tab to view Eternal Ecstasy in its entirety:

About the Author

Born in Canada, I grew up in one of our country’s greatest cities – Montreal, Quebec. After moving to another major city, as a young adult I lived in Toronto until I made my way further west to the beautiful Pacific coast of British Columbia.

After more than two decades of what is considered traditional full-time employment, I found myself experiencing the pressures and pleasures of on and off employment, which led me to creative writing.

During times when I was off employment, I found myself returning to activities that bring satisfaction and a sense of purpose. Taking time to myself while enjoying unscheduled daily routines, such as quiet walks by the shoreline in-between rigorous physical activities, I filled other hours of the day with a dedicated creative writing schedule. This is how the collection of poems featured in Ocean Air came to be.

Thank you for taking a moment of your time to get to know about me.

Cadence B.
