Pea Mutiny

by Cadence Beret

You say I’m oversensitive
When all I really am
Is someone not unlike
The Princess and the Pea

I’m saddened by every negative word
That you say to me
I’m hurt by every negative action
That you do to me
I’m angered by every negative thought
That you think of me

I’m as sensitive as can be
I’m like the Princess and the Pea

I try so hard to protect myself
With sheets of metal shields
I try so hard to pretend
That nothing bothers me

I’ve not enough thick mattresses
To comfortably lie upon
I’ve not enough sheets of metal
To keep you from hurting me
I’ve not enough precious peas to sell
To escape this misery

I’m as sensitive as can be
I’m like the Princess and the Pea

And so every day I dress up
To look like a warrior princess
I fight with everyone
It’s not how I’m meant to be

I’m tired and I’m broken
From all this endless battling
I’m angered and I’m saddened
From all this carelessness
I’m going to hide to get away
From all this pain and sadness

I’m as sensitive as can be
I’m like the Princess and the Pea
